Established in New York City, 1994
As the domain name implies, content posted here shouldn’t be taken too seriously.
It’s play!
Some writings were made available here perhaps far too early in the editing cycle, but that’s part of the fun of it all.
This isn’t a blog– it’s a website where some content occasionally gets updated in place (rather than as a stream sequenced by date/time or tags).
The domain name registration goes back to 1994 when nearly all words in the English dictionary were still available. Registrations were still free, and dinosaurs roamed the streets with names like Pontiac and Oldsmobile.
As may be observed by searching whois, play.org
was registered before play.com. After all, this isn’t associated with any
business, and obviously .ORG
would be suitable for a personal website and
email address. (It also didn’t occur to many of us at that time to register
.COM
equivalents or other ordinary words, as only one domain was needed…
There’s enough to go around.)
Most of the content on this website is available under terms of Creative Commons Attribution, but check footers of each page. Only a minority of pages are restricted in terms of use, generally due to collaborations with others or because of also/potentially being published elsewhere.
Some items predate existence of websites in general; see chronology for samples.
